Idris succeeds Mr. Solomon Arase, who retired yesterday having clocked 60 years of age.
Until his appointment yesterday, Idris from Niger State was an Assistant Inspector-General, (AIG) in charge of Federal Operations at the Force Headquarters, Abuja and before then, the Police Commissioner in Nasarawa and Kano State Police Commands in the last two years.
The new police helmsman was escorted to the Presidential Villa by the out-going IGP, at about 2.20 pm, in a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with registration number, NPF 03-34.
Arase later introduced his successor to State House correspondents after emerging from a private meeting with Buhari at about 3 pm.
Idris’ appointment would be confirmed by the Police Service Commission and subsequently ratified by the Council of State.
Arase thanked Nigerians for the cooperation given him while he served as Inspector General of Police, adding: “By extention I want to also appeal to you to give the same support that you gave to me to my successor. He is a younger man so I am sure he will be abreast with contemporary policing issues.”
Idris, in his remarks, said he would lead the force that would put integrity, honesty and sincerity of purpose as its core values.
His words: “Honestly, my idea is about collective leadership.
The Nigerian police is going to be governed by internationally recognised core values of policing everywhere in the world, that is the issue of integrity and accountability, issue of respect for diversity, issue of compassion, issues of ensuring that our streets, our neighbourhoods, our communities remain safe.
“We are going to do everything possible to ensure that we provide the best service to this country.”
Idris started his police career in 1984 when he joined the force as Cadet ASP after which he was posted as Gusau Police Divisional Crime Officer in 1986 and later Unit Commander 7 PMF Sokoto between 1987 and 1989. He was elevated to the rank of Deputy Police Commissioner Operations and Second in Command at the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor Leste UNMIT between 2009 to April 2011 and again, Acting Police Commissioner UNMIT. Before then, he served as Mission Police Operation Co-ordinator of the United Nations Mission in Liberia.
In July of the same year, he was appointed Kano State Commissioner of Police, a position he held until February 2013 when he was selected to attend Senior Police Officers Course at Nigeria Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies Kuru (NIPSS) where he bagged the prestigious mni membership
